In the event your power drawbar starts making a noticeable popping sound, followed by a the tool hanging up on a tool release command, the remedy covered below should get you back to a smooth tool change situation.
Grease the Gripper
-
Start by covering the mill table with cardboard or towels.
-
Begin with an empty spindle, and spray compressed air and WD40 up the spindle at the gripper to clean out any lingering chips or debris.
-
Apply a liberal amount of general purpose grease to a tool holders pull stud. (Any reasonable quality grease or better will do)
-
Insert and release the greased holder/stud combo a number of times to make sure the grease is being deposited on the gripped and the cavity of the spindle.
-
Apply a little more WD40 spray onto the freshly greased gripper, but just a handful of quick shots, just enough to break down the grease a little bit, but not enough to wash it out.
-
Wipe any excess oil or grease off of the spindle taper itself.
-
Test out the drawbar for popping.
-
If the popping continues, you can attempt the same process with anti-seize.
